While I was working on the Volvo. I didn't recognize the guy who got out of it, and he didn't look like he wanted to be approached. In fact, I think he was giving me a weird look for staring at him as he pulled in.

Tell me it was a diesel... because that would be amazing. And not because they were great, but because they were so miserable that I cannot accept that someone would have let it live this long without driving it off a bridge!

God those cars were awful . I mean truly terrible... and yet I want one.
I spent a fair amount of time driving a 1988 back in the mid 90s and it was terrible then. The automatic seat belts would try to strangle you randomly, it consumed oil at an alarming rate, and and it slowed down appreciably when you turned the AC on. It also had a serpentine belt that alerted you to the presence of pretty women in the car next to you. It was quiet most of the time, but as soon as a car full of hotties pulled up, it would start howling and screeching and keep doing that until they were out of earshot. Then it would quiet back down.
Around that time, there was a kid who used to bring a mid-80s Escort GT Turbo to Milan Dragway. I recall it being a 16 second car, bone stock. To this day, that's the only real Escort GT Turbo I've ever seen. I really want one of those!

They really are pretty cool. The 80s-ness is just irresistible. This one literally sounded like a motorcycle.

It seems like half the people out there driving cars like these are only doing so because they can't afford something better, and somehow they find it embarrassing...
Personally, I'd be embarrassed to be embarrassed by my car.
